Why does Henrico County have more licensed assisted living than anywhere else around Richmond?

Henrico wraps around the city on three sides and its West End grew up along Broad Street, Patterson Avenue and the Parham Road corridor near two HCA hospitals and Bon Secours St. Mary's, which made it the natural place for large assisted living, continuing care and nursing campuses to cluster.

For families, that density is useful: you can tour three or four licensed communities in an afternoon without leaving the Parham-to-Gaskins stretch. It also means pricing and amenities vary widely within a few miles, so compare written rate sheets rather than assuming one neighborhood is cheaper.

Eastern Henrico is a different market. Highland Springs, Sandston and the Varina area have fewer and generally smaller licensed homes, and families there often weigh a home in the East End against a drive out to the West End.

Is Henrico County a separate jurisdiction from the City of Richmond for senior services?

Yes. Henrico is a county with its own Department of Social Services, its own Adult Protective Services unit and its own police and emergency services, even where the post office calls the address Richmond; benefits like the Auxiliary Grant are applied for through Henrico DSS if the person lives in the county.

When someone moves from a city address into a Henrico facility, any Medicaid or Auxiliary Grant case generally has to follow them to the new locality's agency. Ask the facility's business office how they handle the transfer, and keep copies of every notice.
